Should Ask Questions During your Next Vehicle Purchase
Buying a vehicle can be a very stressful experience for some of us, especially if it is a pre-loved unit. In order to help you make an informed decision and simplify the process for you, we’ve created this list of questions you should ask your seller before you sign the deal.
Check the Vehicle History Report
All dealers in Ontario are required to provide a CarFax history report for each vehicle on their lot. The CarFax report shows all of the police-reported accidents, insurance claims, recalls and registration renewals/transfers on the vehicle. Sometimes, depending on which service shop the vehicle was taken to, you will also see its service records. Reviewing the CarFax report prior to signing your deal is always a great idea as it gives you a better understanding of the vehicle you are about to purchase.
The CarFax vehicle report will also show you if the vehicle was written off or branded after an accident. On the ownership, you can also see if the vehicle has been rebuilt. At Janex Auto Sales, we cannot be certain in the quality of branded/rebuilt vehicles and we do not have any of them on our lot. We highly recommend you stay away from them as well if you want to avoid multiple problems down the road.
Unless a vehicle is clearly listed as an as-is unit, every dealer in Ontario is required to complete an Ontario safety inspection and provide you with the safety certificate upon delivery of the vehicle. It is always a good idea to be informed on what items the safety covers and whether or not you are eligible to get an extended warranty with your purchase.

Have all the promises made been put in writing?
Unfortunately, there have been many dealers in the past who have taken advantage of the limited experience of their customers – they promised things which ended up not getting done because they have not been put on paper. And the customer is left disappointed. To avoid having such an experience, make sure that all promises which were made to you are added in the “Conditions” section on the bill of sale. This holds the dealer reliable for fulfilling these promises.
Are there any hidden fees?
Another unfortunate practice in this industry is that many dealers list their vehicles at a very low price which attracts customers, however, these customers end up having to pay multiple fees which they were not aware of. We are talking hundreds of dollars here. Terms like “documentation fee” or “admin fee” are meaningless and are just another means to increase the dealer’s profit. So you need to make sure that you ask your sales associate about this prior to signing. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road!
